I like to think I’m a pretty knowledgeable person when it comes to medical jargon. So when I heard the word “histology” in my biology class, I was actually quite excited for this new topic. But then my professor began talking about slides and Latin terms, and it all quickly became like some sort of crazy science gibberish. I looked up what histology is, and found out that it’s the study of human cells under a microscope! Wow! It also turns out that this field has been around since the early 1800s! It was originally created by a scientist named Rudolf Virchow who discovered how cells are connected to tissue types from your body. Then in 1875, Karl Gegenbaur figured out the structure of the cell, and soon after that histology became its own separate field! The most common way to study histology is by looking at microscopes. The microscopes commonly used for histology were invented by Ernst Abbe in 1878. He created the formula for how much throughput you will get with this particular type of microscope. He also said that it would also perform best with biological specimens!A microscope gives us the ability to look at any part of our anatomy under a magnified view. This is called microscopic evaluation. Magnification is simply an increase in size of an object or image. The magnification of a microscope is a bit trickier to understand. The magnification is determined by the eyepiece of a microscope, and not the objective lens. The magnification can be raised or lowered depending on how much you use the ocular lens. The objectives of a microscope are also an element that affects the image that you see under your microscope. The higher the numerical value, the more powerful the objective. Numerical values range anywhere between 4-1,600. A diaphragm is also something used for microscopic evaluation on certain types of tissues and cells. Diaphragms change the shape of the light beam so that the image has a uniform distribution. The other part of microscopy is staining. By staining tissue, you can show any given type of tissue in a more vivid and clear view. This uses a stain called a fixation solution. The stains are made from chemicals that will bind to any type of cells or parts of cells. To get a better understanding on how staining works, let’s look at two different types of stains: hematoxylin and eosin! Hematoxylin is very commonly used in histology because it shows blood vessels, making it easier to study blood flow through them under a microscope. On the other hand, eosin is a normal stain for tissue. It is used in the study of skin, bone, and cartilage. There are many communities that you can join to learn about histology. You can find these groups either at local universities or online. Some of them include the American Society of Histotechnologists and Pathologists, American Society for Histochemistry, Association of Histotechnologist Scientists, and the International Society of Histochemists There are also many textbooks that you will need to use when studying histology. cfa1e77820
